Plastic Playing Cards

Most cards are made of paper with a layer of plastic to make them stiff, and reduce wear.  Plastic cards are made entirely of plastic.  They have a very long life, are not damaged by water, and can even be cleaned when they get dirty.

Plastic-Coated Playing Cards

These cards are made of paper with a layer of plastic to make them stiff, and reduce wear. There can be quite a difference between qualities of plastic-coated cards depending on the thickness of the layer of plastic.  Generally, the more expensive a deck of cards, the thicker the plastic coating and the longer life they will have.

Bridge Playing Cards

There are two types of "regular" playing cards: Bridge and Poker.  Bridge cards have 52 cards in 4 suits + 2 jokers.  They are the same as Poker cards except for their size.  Bridge cards are 1/4 inch narrower than Poker cards.

Bridge cards are designed for games like Bridge, where the players hold many cards in their hands.  The narrower size makes it easier to hold a large handful.

Regular Index Playing Cards

The index of a card refers to the size of the printing on the face of the card and has nothing to do with the physical dimensions of the card.

Regular index is the standard size of printing, and an example is shown to the right.  Each card company generally has slightly different designs for the face cards and for the aces and jokers.
