Children of the Sun
Raevich is a world still haunted by the spectre of
war. Even so, the conflict known as the Great Conflagration led to
remarkable advancements in technological fields such as arcane
engineering. These advancements, such as cannons and airships,
continue to pay dividends today. "Dieselpunk deviates from
fantasy in the truest sense because of the technological elements such
as radio," says Misguided Games President Lewis Pollak.
"What we tried very hard to do was to provide a twist on
traditional "Tolkien-esque" fantasy. We wanted to punch it
up with the modern aspects while still keeping enough of the fantasy
elements that the players have an intuitive sense of how their
characters fit into the scheme of things. This was critical, since we
wanted to appeal to beginning as well as more advanced players. You
can see this in the choice of races as well, starting with Humans and
Elves, then diverging to creatures that are much more unusual, such as
the plant-like Banfilidh or the leonine Avendera."
Children of the Sun also features a new set of mechanics known as the
Token System. According to Lewis Pollak, "The Token System was
created because we had definite ideas in mind regarding the actual
play of the game that I didn't feel I could achieve through the use of
an existing set of rules such as the well-known d20 System. The Token
System is not a rules-light system, nor does it play remarkably
quickly, but it endeavors to keep the players involved in the action
and let their characters do what they need to do when the player wants
them to do it. This has led to repeated reports from playtesters that
the game feels cinematic."
